Senator Obama Goes to Africa

Senator Obama Goes to Africa

Co-Producer and Editor

Senator Obama Goes to Africa was broadcast in over one hundred countries and is now in home-video release from First Run Features.

In 2007, it was clear that Senator Obama was a rising star. Director Bob Hercules and cinematographer Keith Walker had the opportunity to accompany him as he traveled to the land of his ancestry, visiting Kenya, South Africa, and a Darfur refugee camp in Chad. But this was not a typical vérité scenario— journalists and cameras were everywhere and access to the Senator was carefully controlled. Back in the edit suite, the goal was to create something more than a travelogue. Aided by Keith Walker's dazzling and bountiful footage, the heart of the film ultimately centered upon Senator Obama's emotional journey to his father's homeland in Kisumu, Kenya. An interview with Senator Obama was used to give his perspective throughout the narrative and to tie the film together.
